INDIVIDUAL/FAMILY ENTRY
You do NOT have to be a professional or work with a business to be a part of this exciting event.
Individuals, groups, and students are all welcome to participate! Have an idea? Build with friends, family, your classmates, your co-workers, or create your very own piece.

OUR 3 BUILD CATEGORIES

There are three categories for entries. If you can’t decide which category your entry should be in, don’t worry! Choose the one that best fits your design. Our categories are as follows:

Dog House: A structure, usually enclosed, that can be used as indoor or outdoor shelter for the canines in our life.
Cat Condo: A place for cats to play, exercise, relax, or sleep.
Pet Furniture: Furniture for both people and pets.

OUR BUILD GUIDELINES

Structures must be tailored toward feline (cat) or canine (dog) persuasion, constructed to be
functional and durable for indoor or outdoor use. All structures must be complete, without exposed nails or other materials that will be harmful to animals.

All cat condos, dog houses, and pet furniture weighing over 50 lbs. must include a base constructed of 3/4” plywood and casters. Please use 3 in. general duty swivel casters with rubber wheels.

The maximum dimensions are: 30” x 48” x 48” including movable caster base. Any projections must be within these dimensions or the piece must be able to be easily disassembled for transport.

When designing and buying materials for your structure, please keep in mind that the average auction value in the past has been $400. Top-selling entries have had an auction value of $1,000-$1,500.

Please include a description of entry telling us a little bit about the entry. Be sure to include any
special features or your inspiration for building the piece. All entries must be dropped off.

ENTRY DROP-OFF

The entry must be completed and dropped off at:
PLACE: Krause’s Cafe; 148 S Castell Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130
TIME: Sunday, October 16th, from 9am-12pm. Entries will be accepted for display.
After entries are dropped off, a panel of judges will pick their three favorite entries from each
category and they will be auctioned in the Live Auction for Canine Classmates “Raise the Woof.” The remaining entries will be available to bid on during the silent auction at the event.
All entries will be auctioned at the event (Krause’s on October 16th, 2022 from 2-5pm) with all proceeds going to Canine Classmates.

FAQs

Do I need to be a professional designer, engineer, builder, etc.?

Not at all! We have plenty of handy people that build entries without any professional expertise. We welcome individuals, groups, and students/schools to participate.

Do I need to build the entry from scratch?

Nope! Many of our entries are hand-built from scratch by our talented contestants. However, that’s not necessary. Some contestants find a beat up end table, a cabinet, or some other flea market find and “up-cycle” the item, turning it into a great piece for a dog or cat. We recommend not using a pre-fabricated kit, as original ideas are always the best!

Are there size limits?

Yes! The maximum dimensions are 30” x 48” x 48”. If the entry exceeds this size, the piece must be easily disassembled for transport. Please remember, these entries usually find a home in someone’s living room, so the saying “bigger is better” doesn’t always apply here. If the entry exceeds 50 lbs., it must include a base with casters. The base should be constructed using ¾’ plywood and casters that make it easily movable.

Are there any specific structural requirements?

The entries must be complete, without exposed nails or other materials that may be harmful to animals. Entries, especially larger dog houses, should be durable for indoor or outdoor use.

RELEASE AND INDEMNIFICATION

I, the undersigned, represent the company, team or individual named above, and have full authority to authorize this release and indemnification.
I hereby give and grant to CANINE CLASSMATES the right to use,
publish and copyright our dog house entry and photographs in promotion of the Dog House Building Competition. I agree that no advertisement or other material need be submitted to me for approval and CANINE CLASSMATES shall be without liability to me for any distortion or illusionary effect resulting from the publication, portrait or likeness in any advertising and promotion. I hereby release and agree to indemnify CANINE CLASSMATES from and against any and all liability arising out of the exercise of the rights granted by this Release. Further, I hereby indemnify and hold harmless CANINE CLASSMATES from any and all claims arising from the display, use, transfer or ownership of our dog house entry.

OWNERSHIP

The dog house becomes the property of CANINE CLASSMATES once it is dropped off at the event location. The dog house must be delivered to Krause’s Cafe no later than 12:00pm on October 16th, 2022 to qualify for the silent auction of CANINE CLASSMATES.

A Judging Committee will be selected by the CANINE CLASSMATES Board of Directors to judge the dog houses once they are delivered to Krause’s Cafe.
Prizes will be awarded by our judging committee.
Note: All costs associated with building materials and equipment for dog/cat houses are the responsibility of the team.

DESIGN GUIDELINES

Be creative and have fun. Your final products will be enjoyed by dogs, cats, and people alike. Please remember that finished houses must be safe, comfortable, and practical.

For dogs: we recommend designed houses can accommodate straw, shavings, or other removable bedding; be raised slightly off the ground to keep the floor dry; and have a sheltered area for when “Fido” just wants to kick back and relax.

For cats: we recommend materials that allow cats to crawl, explore, and climb; cubby holes; and critter accommodations.

Your house will be viewed and touched by the public. Please pay special attention to exposed corners, sharp edges, and unfinished materials.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

All teams will be required to provide a preliminary design package to donna@canineclassmates.org no later than September 16th, 2022, for review to ensure all plans are appropriate and meet specifications.
